Seward (pronounced Sue-Ward), is a historic coastal town located just about 125 miles south of Anchorage. It is famous for its dramatic mountain views, deep-water port, and its role as the gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park.

Some things to know about Seward, Alaska!

  1. This state is named after a Statesman. The town honors William H. Seward, Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of State, who bought Alaska from Russia in 1867.

(The sale went for 2 cents an acre!)

  2. Seward is the birthplace of the Alaska State Flag! Benny Benson, at 13-year-old Alutiiq boy, lived in Seward when he won a 1927 contest to design the official State Flag. There is a memorial in Seward for Benny, who created the iconic midnight-blue colored flag that features, in gold, the Big Dipper and North Star.

  3. Seward is home to the Alaska SeaLife Center, Alaska’s only public aquarium and dedicated marine mammal rescue facility.

  4. Seward is one of the stops along our upcoming Winter in Alaska Trip, where we experience this one-of-a-kind destination in real life, in real time.
